Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery

Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery

Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery is located in South St. Louis County. Originally built in 1826 as the first permanent army base west of the Mississippi River, Jefferson Barracks was also the training post for the Union Army during the Civil War. A hospital for the Union army's sick and wounded was also located within Jefferson Barracks. In 1866 it was established as a national cemetery for soldiers who died in the service of the United States. Many Union and Confederate soldiers are interred there, as well as service men and women from all wars that the US has been involved in through out the years.
